Building Systems,
Not Just Websites

I'm Raymond Matovu β€” a digital systems engineer focused on building purposeful web systems using core web technologies. I operate under Pam Tech Solutions, a small engineering practice I built to deliver quality digital work to individuals, businesses, and organisations.

My approach to web development is deliberately structured. I don't reach for frameworks before understanding fundamentals. Every system I build is grounded in semantic HTML, organised CSS architecture, and modular JavaScript β€” because those foundations determine the long-term quality of anything built on top of them.

I'm currently deepening my backend knowledge and working toward full-stack capability β€” building systems that are not just visually correct, but architecturally sound.

Engineering Philosophy

Understand before building

A system built without fully understanding the problem will solve the wrong thing well. I spend time clarifying requirements, constraints, and success criteria before writing a single line of code.

Fundamentals over abstractions

Frameworks come and go. HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are the stable substrate of the web. Mastering them means I can work effectively with any framework β€” or without one entirely.

Code as communication

Every file I write will eventually be read by another person β€” including a future version of myself. Clean naming, organised structure, and clear comments are engineering decisions, not cosmetic ones.

Accessibility is non-negotiable

The web is a public infrastructure. Semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, and accessible colour contrast are baseline requirements β€” not optional add-ons for a later sprint.

Engineering Principles

🧱
Semantic Structure

HTML that communicates meaning β€” not just visual layout. The right element for the right purpose.

πŸ—‚
Organised CSS

Custom properties, layered specificity, and consistent naming. CSS that scales without fighting itself.

βš™οΈ
Modular JavaScript

Functions that do one thing. Modules with clear responsibilities. State that is explicit, not implicit.

πŸ“±
Mobile First

Design and build for the smallest screen first. Layer complexity upward β€” not downward.

β™Ώ
Accessibility

ARIA where needed, keyboard-navigable, colour-contrast compliant. The web is for everyone.

πŸ§ͺ
Test Before Ship

Cross-browser checks, edge-case validation, and real-device testing before a project is considered done.

πŸ“–
Documentation

Comments explain the why, not the what. Readmes that actually help. Code that doesn't need a translator.

πŸ”
Continuous Improvement

Every project teaches something. Every codebase I revisit gets a little cleaner.

Engineering Timeline

2020
First line of HTML

Started learning web development through self-directed study β€” HTML structure, CSS styling basics, and the fundamentals of how browsers work.

2021
JavaScript fundamentals

Deep dive into vanilla JavaScript β€” DOM manipulation, event handling, fetch API, and building interactive pages without frameworks.

2022
First client projects

Built first paid websites for local businesses in Kampala β€” landing pages, contact forms, responsive layouts. Real constraints, real feedback, real growth.

2023
Pam Tech Solutions launched

Formalised the work under a proper engineering practice. Started building more structured projects β€” web applications, reusable component systems, and documented deliverables.

2024
Backend & full-stack exploration

Began structured study of Node.js, Express, REST API design, and SQLite. Building toward full-stack capability with the same deliberate approach applied to the frontend.

Now
Building the portfolio & deepening craft

Documenting engineering decisions, contributing to open projects, and expanding system design knowledge. Every project is a deliberate step forward.

Learning Roadmap

A structured plan β€” not a wishlist. Each item connects to something I'm actively building.

Active Backend

Node.js & Express

Building REST APIs, middleware design, and server-side routing. Working toward connecting front-end systems to proper backends.

Active Data

SQLite & SQL

Relational database design, query writing, data integrity constraints, and integrating persistent storage into web applications.

Planned Engineering

System Architecture

Patterns for scalable frontend architecture: module boundaries, state management, component contracts, and design documentation.

Planned DevOps

Deployment & CI

Git workflows, deployment pipelines, environment configuration, and maintaining quality across development and production.

Planned Testing

Automated Testing

Unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end browser tests. Moving beyond manual checking to systematic quality assurance.

Planned Performance

Web Performance

Core Web Vitals, asset optimisation, lazy loading strategies, and measuring real user performance β€” not just Lighthouse scores.

What I'm Currently Building

01
This Portfolio

A full multi-page portfolio built entirely with HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript β€” no frameworks, no build tools. Designed to demonstrate engineering judgment, not just visual design.

02
EduTrack β€” Student Progress System

A web application for tracking student academic performance. Currently implementing the grade entry module and chart visualisations without any chart library dependencies.

03
Node.js REST API β€” study project

Building a structured REST API from scratch with Express, covering authentication, CRUD operations, input validation, and error handling conventions.
